Grunley was the prime contractor for the construction and renovation/rehabilitation of buildings 31, 33-34, 37, and 49. The scope included the adaptive reuse and historic restoration of these five historic buildings located on the campus of the Department of Homeland Security, including the original campus theatre, dining hall and kitchen, “relief” quarters, the ice house, and the construction shop building. The St. Elizabeths campus is a designated National Historic Landmark. The unoccupied buildings were restored and renovated into modern office and conference space, dining facilities, an auditorium and gymnasium. Each building is seeking LEED 2009 Gold certification. Most recently, the project received a 2014 Alliant Build America National Award for Best Renovation Project from the Associated General Contractors of America. In 2013, the project received a Craftsmanship Award for Windows and Storefronts from the Washington Building Congress and a Washington Contractor Award for Historic Renovation / Restoration from the Associated General Contractors of Metropolitan Washington.
