aberdeen (C4ISR Center of Excellence)
By: Mark G. Senula, Senior Project Manager
Grunley Construction’s tri-venture with Tompkins-Turner Government Services and Kinsley Construction consists of the construction of the “C4ISR Center of Excellence” design-build project, located at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Harford, County, Maryland. The project team is aggressively managing and delivering this challenging $500 million dollar project. The project has required over 1,800,000 man-hours while averaging 950 men on-site per day.
Eight of the nine separate buildings are well underway with the demolition of existing buildings starting to allow for construction of the MTF facility to start. Two pre-engineered metal buildings are fully erected; OH cranes are installed and are starting to be fitted out. In the 242,000 sf 3-story lab building we are installing ceiling grid and painting of the drywall; equipment start-up with flooring and commissioning are to start soon. All four 5-story office buildings have substantially completed exteriors (including roofing) and are in various stages of interior fit-out. All studs and majority of drywall have been completed in all buildings. Door frames are being installed and ceiling grid installation is scheduled to start within the next few weeks.
The in-ground Pruden Auditorium exterior concrete and roofing have been installed, the green roof plantings are well underway, and the curtain wall is up and being glazed. Air handling units are set, masonry walls are nearing completion, and field dimensioning of erected partitions is underway for the finishes. The acoustical wood panels are being fabricated in addition to the auditorium seating. Major mechanical and electrical systems are progressing.
Site light poles are being installed as is final paving of the parking lots. The courtyard grading and sidewalks are being installed, and the landscaping company is busy installing plantings and permanent seeding.
The construction team is continuing to maintain the aggressive schedule dealing with a significant number of owner directed design changes.
