U.s. food & drug administration (fda) building one
wHITE OAK, md
Work continues on the renovations and additions to the historic FDA Building One (currently unoccupied). The building is located at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's White Oak Federal Center. Building One houses FDA personnel, including the FDA Commissioner. FDA Building One is a LEED®-Silver candidate project.
Current Status
Considerable progress has been made toward the timely completion of this project. Extensive sitework, asphalt paving, and massive new infrastructure have been put in place. These activities have been coordinated with other contractors performing work on adjacent sites. As part of this effort, new masonry walls have been constructed to enhance the main entrance to the campus along New Hampshire Avenue.
Interior demolition has been performed throughout Building One making the job ready for construction of new office spaces and a new security pavilion to serve as the main entrance to the building. Spaces deemed to be historical have been protected (e.g., three staircases, lobby space). Historic lighting has been carefully removed from the lobby and restored to its original condition and reinstalled.
What's Next?
Installation of approximately 300 new windows will be getting underway. A new curtainwall system, small pedestrian bridge (leading to the adjacent building), and elevators will be added. Energy-efficient lighting, terrazzo flooring and new finishes will be installed. The Commissioner's office, conference room, and other office space will be renovated. New North and South entrances will be built. Existing historic finishes (e.g., marble and stone in the lobby) will be repaired and cleaned.
The new entrance to the building, once constructed, will feature a canopy, a portion of which will be made of glass and stone. A circular greenspace will be featured at the front of building. The greenspace will be bordered with granite walls, LED lighting, and proudly display a ship’s mast relocated from its prior setting when the site was occupied by the U.S. Navy. Over 150 new trees will be planted along New Hampshire Avenue.
The project is scheduled for completion in Fall 2008.
