U.S. Department of Energy, James V. Forrestal Building, Life Safety Sprinkler Installation and Fire Alarm Replacement
Washington, DC

By: Lauren Walker, Project Manager

Current Status

The upgrades to the James V. Forrestal Building include new life safety systems through the three buildings on the campus, totaling 1,600,000 square feet. So far, Grunley Construction has upgraded the fire alarm, sprinkler, HVAC and lighting systems and has added new ceiling grid and tile in ten of the 20 phases and seven of the 27 subphases.

Although the building is maintained by the Department of Energy, there are several offices occupied by other agencies. Each agency has its own security requirements and guidelines that present additional challenges and must be followed strictly during our daily activities. Grunley Construction has remained flexible and has been able to address the special needs of each agency.  Also, in order to minimize any disruptions to the building occupants, almost all of our installations are performed after regular business hours.

In addition to the new life safety systems, a new emergency generator and fire pump with a renovated enclosure are being provided.

The project is scheduled for completion in May 2010.
