FORT MYER CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER
Ft. Myer, virginia

By Tracy Hill, Assistant Project Manager

The Ft. Myer Child Development Center when completed will be a 51,000 sf state of the art center designed for almost 500 infant to school aged children. The facility will include radiant heated floors in the infant modules, a computer lab, activity areas, a large multi-purpose room and two commercial kitchens.

Current Status

We received permanent power to the building on the last day in February! Mechanical and electrical start-up is progressing. Finishes have commenced! Framing and drywall are basically completed. Kitchen equipment is being installed. Casework has started, including built-in work areas in each child care module, kitchenettes in each infant module, and built-in shelving. Sheet vinyl is being installed in the care modules. Painting in the care modules is complete with most other areas at least primed, including the Central Activity Area with its 30’ high ceilings. The ceiling grid is also going in and ceiling tile is being installed along the edges. Playground work started this week (see photo above).

What's Next?

In the weeks that follow, finishes will be completed; start-up and commissioning activities will also be completed. Punch-list work is about to start. Some of the buildings final activities will take place, including a poured athletic surface in the multi-purpose room, acoustical wall panels and ceiling baffles will be installed, and an interior store-front roof will also give the central activity room an open atmosphere.
