The MARC Edgewood Station Improvements Project involves the construction of a new station building as well as numerous site upgrades to each side of the AMTRAK right-of-way in Edgewood, Maryland. The station will remain operational throughout construction, making the phasing of the project a top priority so that MARC customers are not affected.

Current Status

Since the station’s property is adjacent to the Aberdeen Proving Grounds, the government requires that the site be surveyed for unexploded ordnance (UXO) before ground-breaking activities can occur. Grunley is currently working with its UXO contractor to document the site accordingly and hopes to begin construction activities in late November. Depending on the phase, Grunley and its subcontractors will be working within 15 feet of an active AMTRAK railway. Most trains do not stop at the Edgewood Station, traveling at approximately 100 mph. For this reason, all onsite personnel are required to attend an AMTRAK Contractor Safety Training Course. Grunley is currently coordinating the training of its project team.

What’s Next?

Construction in the first phase involves the demolition and replacement of sections of Parking Lot 2, as well as the installation of a new entrance from Old Edgewood Road. Phase two will follow in early January that includes the construction of the new station building.
