The Reed School/Westover Library Project is a joint use building for Arlington Public Schools, and Arlington County Westover Library. The project is located in the Westover Neighborhood in Arlington along Washington Boulevard. The existing school building consists of three structures two of which were added to the original 1938 building in 1940, and 1960.

The schedule duration on the project is 16 months, and is currently phased for completion in July 2009. The project has been broken down into three sequences of work for simplicity during construction.

Scope of Work

Our contract includes demolition of all building additions, and selective demolition of the original 1938 building leaving only the building shell. The new construction includes a new:

The overall site plan for the building is aimed at maintaining as much green space for the community use as was present prior to construction. Grunley is also installing a new baseball field to replace the existing ball field which is currently our staging area, as well as new basketball courts.

There is a large amount of utility work currently being installed throughout the project site, which includes new sewer lines, storm lines, and a tree pit drainage system for the perimeter of the building. The front entrance to the new building will consist of a plaza with incremental green space throughout.

The Reed School/Westover Library project is a LEED® Silver project. One of the most environmental features for the project is a Photovoltaic Roofing System which will be installed over the existing 1938 Building roof which will harvest solar power.

Current Status

Presently Grunley is complete with the bulk building demolition. We are erecting shoring to demolish the remaining load bearing interior walls of the 1938 structure. This week Grunley began installing the concrete foundations for Sequence 1, and grading the building pads at Sequence 2, and Sequence 3. The goal for the project is to achieve building enclosure prior to the winter to begin our finishes, and building systems for summer completion.
