Grunley Construction has completed the George P. Shultz National Foreign Affairs Training Center in Arlington, Va. The scope of work includes the construction of two new administrative and instructional buildings, as well as additions to the Childcare Center, Dining Facility, and Visitor Center. The Central Plant also received upgrades, and additional parking areas were created.
Current Status
The Central Plant Expansion was substantially completed on Nov. 6, 2009. This work included the installation of a new chiller, cooling tower and transformer and the relocation of some existing mechanical equipment. The equipment in the Central Plant will support the addition of the two new buildings on campus - Buildings F and K.
Building F, a three-story concrete structure containing mostly classrooms and administrative offices, was substantially completed on Sept. 21, 2009. The State Department is currently occupying the structure.
Building K is a four-story steel structure that is connected to Building F through a three-story glass-enclosed link building. Building K contains mainly classrooms and administrative offices, as well as a large multi-purpose room complete with operable partitions and a state of the art audio/visual system. The building was substantially completed on Nov. 25, 2009.
The Childcare Center Addition not only provides a larger play area outside, but it also more than triples the size of the current Childcare Center. The expansion portion was substantially completed on Jan. 25, 2010, and renovation work wrapped up at the existing structure in April.
The Dining Facility expansion adds a new 2,200 SF special events dining room and remodeled kitchen and servery areas. This work was substantially completed on Jan. 31, 2010.
The Visitor Center expansion provides a new secure entrance point to the State Department campus. The work at the main entrance includes an additional entrance point and security checkpoint. All of this work was completed while maintaining a fully operational facility. Substantial completion for this addition was Oct. 17, 2009.
Lastly, the Parking Lot Expansion was substantially completed on Oct. 23, 2009. The Parking Lot Expansion adds more than 100 new parking spaces to the campus along with an upgraded storm water collection system.
A Dedication Ceremony was held on June 18, 2010. For more information, click here.
