By: Joseph Rodenbeck, Grunley Project Engineer
Grunley Construction is constructing two new administrative and instructional buildings at the George P. Shultz National Foreign Affairs Training Center in Arlington, VA as well as additions to the Childcare Center, Dining Facility, Visitor Center, Central Energy Plant, and Parking Lot.
Current Status
Work at the Central Plant is near completion. This work included the installation of a new chiller, cooling tower and transformer as well as the relocation of some existing mechanical equipment. This equipment in the Central Plant will support the addition of the two new buildings on campus - Buildings F & K.
Building F, a three-story concrete structure containing mostly classrooms and administrative offices, is now into its final stages. Finish work such as ceramic tile and millwork are complete, ceiling tiles have been dropped, the walls are being painted, and carpet installation is soon to follow.
As finish work wraps up in Building F, Building K is preparing to start. Building K is a three-story steel structure with a basement under half of the building footprint. This building also contains mainly classrooms and administrative offices. The MEP rough-in is complete and wall and ceiling inspections are being done allowing for close-ins and finish work in the near future.
As these two building get closer to completion, three more expansions are well underway.
- A one-story addition of the Childcare Center will not only provide a larger play area outside but it will also more than triple the size of the current Childcare Center. Exterior framing of the addition is complete and MEP rough-in has begun.
- The Dining Facility expansion will add a new 2,200 SF special events dining room and remodel a majority of the existing kitchen and servery spaces. The steel has been erected and exterior framing is beginning next week.
- The Visitor Center expansion will provide a new secure entrance point to the campus. The work at the main entrance includes an additional entrance point and security check. All of this work must be done while keeping the facility fully operational. The shell of the structure is nearing completion which will allow work to begin on the new security checkpoint inside.
The most recently awarded option to this project is the Parking Lot Expansion. The Parking Lot Expansion will add an additional parking lot to the campus as well as upgrade the existing storm water drainage system. The new lot has already been brought to grade and will soon be paved.
