GRUNLEY CONSTRUCTION COMPLETES PHASE 1 OF MARY E. SWITZER BUILDING MODERNIZATION

Rockville, MD – (June 26, 2008) Grunley Construction, a local general contractor, has completed phase 1 of the Mary E. Switzer Building modernization. At the request of the Owner, the General Services Administration (GSA), Grunley and its subcontractors accelerated the base contract interior work and completed several last minute changes so that the tenant could begin reoccupying the facility more than two months ahead of schedule. The facility will ultimately house staff of the U.S. Dept. of Education, the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, and the U.S. International Broadcasting Bureau (which includes Voice of America).

The Grunley team put a large amount of construction work in place over a short period while integrating some very complex changes. More than 321,000 SF of existing space was renovated and a new 15,000 SF mechanical penthouse was constructed at this historically-significant building. In addition, a new “green” roof was installed and the entire building exterior was cleaned and tuck-pointed. In concert with meeting the accelerated schedule, the Grunley team had to coordinate work with many GSA contractors performing telecommunication, security, and systems furniture installations as well as, preoccupancy renovations to new installations.

Grunley Construction provides a full spectrum of professional construction services, and is well known for its expertise in renovations, restorations, modernizations and additions.  The firm is listed among the Engineering News Record’s Top 400 Contractors.
