While J.W. Powell Laboratories was occupied, Grunley Construction renovated over 111,000 GSF of building space at the facility, headquarters of the U.S. Geological Survey. Our firm performed asbestos and lead abatement; demolished and re-built over 100 scientific research laboratories (many of which are now "clean rooms"); demolished and re-built or renovated over 30 offices, public corridors, computer and conference rooms and support space; upgraded existing MEP & sprinkler systems; installed automatic controls in the building management system; added an acid neutralization system featuring state-of-the-art glass piping; and installed an Emergency Power Supply system with Auto Transfer Switching devices.

To lower operating costs for the facility a heat recovery system, energy conservation system and over 17 variable frequency drives were installed. Today, new laboratory HVAC systems are 100% automated with the supply and exhaust systems integrated to function together. Many of the applications installed are unique to a science-oriented mission and may not be found in office-oriented buildings. The mechanical system can be controlled from remote locations.

Per contract requirements, all work activities, including punch-list and commissioning, were 100% complete at turnover. All work was performed at night, without disrupting on-going scientific work (24/7/365) and while the building remained fully functional for business during normal working hours. The project was completed ahead of schedule and with minimal impact on the Owner (General Services Administration), Tenant (U.S. Geological Survey) and building operations.

Grunley Construction also performed an elevator renovation.
