The U.S. General Services Administration has awarded a joint venture between Gilbane Building Company and Grunley Construction Company a $40 million Construction Manager as Constructor (CMc) contract for Preconstruction and Construction Services for Phase 1 and Preconstruction Services for Phases 2-8 to modernize the Herbert C. Hoover Building in downtown Washington, DC. The building serves as the headquarters for the U.S. Department of Commerce and houses 3,000 staff.
Phase 1 includes the demolition and rebuild of a 100,000 sf swing space in Courtyard #6 which will enable the phased renovation to take place while the building remains occupied and operational. Phase 1 also includes replacement of the cooling towers, and replacement of the building’s primary electrical systems. An option to perform the exterior cleaning and re-pointing of the Pennsylvania Avenue façade has been awarded by GSA but not exercised for construction at this time.
The entire Hoover modernization consists of eight phases spanning 13 years and totaling over $400 million.
