Gilbane Building Company and Grunley Construction Company served as a Construction Manager as Constructor (CMc) to provide Preconstruction and Construction Services for Phase 1 and Preconstruction Services for Phases 2-8 to modernize the Herbert C. Hoover Building in downtown Washington, DC. The building serves as the headquarters for the U.S. Department of Commerce and houses 3,000 staff.
Phase 1 included the demolition and rebuild of a 100,000 sf swing space in Courtyard #6 which enabled the phased renovation to take place while the building remains occupied and operational. Phase 1 also included replacement of the cooling towers, and replacement of the building’s primary electrical systems.
The entire Hoover modernization consists of eight phases spanning 13 years. The project is seeking LEED NC 2.0. Silver.
