The Pentagon is the headquarters of the Department of Defense and at over 6,000,00 square feet, is one of the world's largest office buildings. The National Capitol could fit into any one of the five wedge-shaped sections. The Pentagon is virtually a city in itself, housing over 23,000 military and civilian employees, who contribute to the planning and execution of the defense of our country. The site encompasses over 200 acres of lawn and over 8,770 cars in 16 parking lots; 131 stairways, and 19 escalators, and offices that occupy 3,705,793 square feet.
The project was sequenced, beginning with the design of the interior spaces and a concurrent construction activity that included demolition and the removal of all hazardous material. The interior spaces included a segregated Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities area, a stand-alone Uninteruptable Power System, and telecommunication facility.
The interior design portion of the project included a raised floor configuration with an open office format. Interior upgrades included new HVAC systems, new power and secure communications, drywall and acoustics improvements, new doors, frames, and hardware with provisions for security, and new finishes.
