Grunley Construction renovated the basement and seven upper level floors of the IRS Headquarters Building located within the historic Federal Triangle of Washington, DC. The work included structural improvements, upgrades to the major building systems, and life safety and other enhancements necessary to bring the building into compliance with requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The original contract included work in every room within this fully occupied federal building. At the basement level the occupants were temporarily relocated within the building during three distinct phases to allow for the removal and replacement of the existing failing concrete slabs with new structural slabs. Concurrent with this structural effort the major building systems were upgraded including the primary electrical system and air handling units.
The project won several awards including a 2008 Aon Build America Award for Federal Heavy Renovation from the Associated General Contractors of America.
