In the late 1970's and early 1980's Grunley performed a multi-phased renovation program on the interior and exterior structure of the Old Post Office Building, built in 1899. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and today serves as a popular tourist attraction.
The scope included:
- The removal and replacement of the existing slate roof & sheet metal.
- The addition of a skylight.
- Restoration of four large clocks (25' around) located at the top of the tower.
- Installation of ten new bells donated from England (the largest weighing four tons) in one 480' tower.
- New mechanical and electrical systems.
- Extensive structural and ornamental work.
- Plaster, millwork, and marble repairs/cleaning.
- Detailed repair work on historic hardware.
The Old Post Office Pavilion is located on Pennsylvania Avenue and 12th Streets, NW, halfway between the White House and the U.S. Capitol. Completed in 1899, it is Washington, D.C.'s first modern "skyscraper".
