J.W. Powell Laboratories - Renovation
Location: 12201 Sunrise Valley Drive, Reston, VA
Owner:U.S. General Services Administration
Contract Amount:$33 million
Date of Completion:08/26/2005
Grunley renovated over 111,000 square feet of building and laboratory space at the headquarters of the U.S. Geological Survey. In eight phases, we performed asbestos and lead abatement and demolished/re-built 100+ scientific research laboratories, over 30 offices, public corridors, computer and conference rooms and support space. The laboratory spaces were fit-out with laboratory casework, fume hoods, glass waste and vent piping and emergency exhaust systems. Some laboratories constructed were also certified as “clean rooms.” We upgraded all of the mechanical, plumbing, life safety and electrical systems. New air handling units (AHU’s) were installed and existing AHU’s were updated. All work was performed at night without disrupting the on-going 24/7/365 scientific work. In 2005, the project received an Award of Merit for Renovation from the Associated General Contractors of Metropolitan Washington.
