Grunley Mourns Loss of Company Co-founder, Martin Grunley

On Friday, April 17th, Martin R. Grunley died peacefully in his sleep at age 98 in his Bethesda home. Martin was the co-founder of Grunley Construction Company, Inc.

“My father was a man of integrity, compassion, and high-standards… aspects that he instilled in the company and culture of Grunley Construction. Grunley will continue to uphold his legacy and vision. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him,” said Ken Grunley, President and CEO of Grunley Construction and son of Martin R. Grunley.

Martin co-founded Grunley-Walsh Construction in 1955. Grunley-Walsh grew quickly and became known for several difficult extensive modernizations to historic landmarks throughout Washington, including the White House, the Blair House (the President's guest house), the Library of Congress, the Cannon House Office Building and the Smithsonian's Arts and Industries Museum.

In 1988, Martin co-founded Grunley Construction Company, Inc. with his son, Ken, and actively helped sculpt the firm into one of the largest and most prominent construction firms in the region. Though he took pride in every job he ever built, Martin took unique pride in renovating the majority of the Federal Triangle, constructing the National World War II Memorial, repairing the Washington Monument and modernizing the Eisenhower Executive Office building.

During his 50 year tenure at Grunley, the company grew to become one of the most respected and successful companies in the construction industry. The entire team at Grunley Construction is grateful and inspired by the strong leadership and vision of its late co-founder. Martin was an avid believer in the power of dedicated employees, the value of hard work, the impact of philanthropy and the importance of exceeding expectations. The company will continue to uphold the values and principles Martin infused in Grunley Construction, while building on the successful foundation he established. It is not just the Grunley name that lives on, but the spirit of excellence Martin instilled in the company.
