Grunley Wins Three Washington Contractor Awards

AGC of DC presented Grunley with three Washington Contractor Awards for the Drake Luxury Apartment Building, Lafayette Building Phase 1 Modernization and Grunley’s Corporate Safety Plan.

This year was AGC of DC’s 14th annual Washington Contractor Awards Program, which honors exceptional projects from the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. area construction industry. AGC of Metropolitan Washington, D.C. is a trade association whose members include the top general contractors, construction managers, specialty contractors and service and supplier companies supporting D.C.'s commercial construction industry. AGC of DC is one of 96 chapters affiliated with AGC of America representing over 33,000 members nationwide. Their prestigious annual competition recognizes the accomplishments of member contractors in their professional roles on the winning projects. Entries are judged by a panel of owners and construction professionals working for firms which are not general contractor or subcontractor members of the association.

This year, Grunley won Washington Contractor Awards in the “Restoration/Renovation” category for the Lafayette Building Phase 1 Modernization; “New Construction” category for The Drake Luxury Apartment Building; and the “Outstanding Corporate Safety Plan Award.”

One of Grunley’s winning projects, the Drake Luxury Apartment Building, is a $27.4 million, 164,000-square-foot new luxury apartment building that introduced the “micro-units” housing concept to D.C.’s Dupont Circle. Micro-units are even more condensed than efficiency apartments and must provide optimum functionality, while allowing the tenant to live as comfortably as possible in a prime urban location. This new housing solution is redefining the housing structure and multi-family housing options. The success of this project was due to the ongoing communication between the project team and stakeholders, effective project management, excellent workmanship, as well as a unified commitment to safety, efficiency and owner satisfaction.

The second award-winning project, Phase 1 of the Lafayette Building Modernization, is a 555,000 gross square foot, 13-story federal office building in Washington, D.C. Initially constructed in 1940 during World War II, it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2005. The Lafayette Building houses the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, Export-Import Bank, General Services Administration building management and retailers. The entire project includes two main phases of renovation with six sub-phases over a period of six years. During Phase 1, Grunley refurbished the exterior limestone façade and windows, replaced and upgraded interior finishes, preserved significant historic features and renovated 10,000 square feet of retail space. Phase 1 transformed amenity spaces including a health care unit, wellness center and concessions area into swing space for tenants. The last stage of Phase 1 was the largest, including a full renovation of 178,686 square feet of interior office space. This phase also included the renovation of the sub-basement and basement levels, as well as the replacement of HVAC equipment with high efficiency mechanical systems.

The final award of merit recognized Grunley’s Corporate Safety Program. The plan was evaluated based on the company’s safety record and details of its corporate safety program. Anecdotes of safety excellence, policies such as participant involvement and the protocol of Grunley’s Safety Committee all contributed to the selection of Grunley’s safety plan for the award.

Grunley is honored to be recognized with the three AGC Washington Contractor Awards.
