Grunley Celebrates Topping Out of Hirshhorn Museum Project

    Grunley achieves significant milestone.

On Thursday, October 13th, Grunley celebrated the topping out of our Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden Façade Repair project! The multi-phase project entails fabricating and installing 675 exposed aggregate precast panels to match the existing panels; replacing the balcony curtainwall; and demolishing and replacing the roof. The new work produces an overall increase to the building's exterior face of three inches to accommodate new waterproofing and insulation. At the time of the topping out, 65% of the precast panels had been placed back on the building. The topping out celebration opened with brief remarks from Lauren Biales-Wise, Project Manager; Victor McCoy, Senior Superintendent; Johnny Taggart, Smithsonian Contracting Officer Technical Representative; and Jaya Kaveeshwar, Deputy Director of the Smithsonian Institution's Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Attendees then enjoyed a barbeque-style lunch. The Hirshhorn Museum project is expected to reach substantial completion in January 2023. Congratulations to the project team for reaching this significant milestone!
