McKinley Elementary School Awarded to Grunley, Breaks Ground

McKinley Elementary School and Arlington County Public Schools broke ground today, June 11th, on the renovation and addition of McKinley Elementary School. The occasion was marked with a ceremonial groundbreaking celebration with project stakeholders and students of McKinley Elementary School. Students sang the McKinley school song, read poetry about their school and helped break ground with small shovels and hard hats.

“Grunley is looking forward to enhancing McKinley's learning environment,” says Chip Scott, Senior Vice President and Operations Manager for Grunley Construction. “We are proud to shape the collaborative and instructional spaces for this school.”

Arlington County Public Schools awarded Grunley a $16.88 million contract for the renovation and addition of McKinley Elementary School. The 102,000 square foot project will involve five phases of work over an 18-month period. The renovation will include administrative offices, classrooms, media center, kitchen and cafeteria, while the expansion will entail a three-story addition with a new gymnasium, a new entrance lobby, 14 new classrooms and associated support spaces. The project also includes extensive site and site system improvements. The school is designed to comply with LEED Silver criteria and will be completed in October 2016.
