Update on the Scottish Rites Project

By Luca Covi, Senior Project Manager

The House of the Temple is the headquarters for the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Southern Jurisdiction. The renovation of this iconic building in Washington, DC is valued at approximately $80 million and is currently in the planning and design phase. It will be accomplished with true Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) methods. The IPD process is governed by the signing of a multi-party integrated form of agreement that provides for a complete collaborative environment, including the owner, architect, contractors and key subcontractors.

On February 5, 2013, eight companies, including Grunley, entered into this agreement that will be the most significant IPD project on the East Coast. It is also one of the first projects to utilize this form of contract on a major renovation.

The team is currently wrapping up the 50% design review pricing. The coming months will include further review as warranted and eventually lead to the 100% design and final pricing. The scope of the renovation will encompass major upgrades to mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire/life safety systems, along with egress modifications and historic restoration. The interior of the building has elaborate stone and wood that will require great care when bringing the building up to modern standards. In addition, a key feature of the renovation will be re-plastering the interior Guastavino dome of the Temple Room.

The work at the House of the Temple is scheduled to be completed in the Summer of 2016, more than 100 years after its original dedication in 1915. The Temple is a John Russell Pope design. Not long after completion, it was ranked as one of the three best public buildings in the United States.
