Grunley Wins $11M Washington Monument Contract
The National Park Service has awarded Grunley a $10.78 million contract to modernize the Washington Monument’s elevator, which has experienced repeated breakdowns in the past few years, and to construct a new permanent visitor screening facility to replace a temporary facility that was built about 16 years ago.
The elevator repairs will include installing a new elevator control system, new equipment, electrical and power wiring, and improved elevator cab communications. The new visitor screening facility will be constructed of a custom glazed exterior envelope, incorporate full ballistic and blast protection, and will have line queuing space for 18 to 20 visitors at a time.
“We’re honored that the National Park Service has selected us for the modernization work at this iconic structure in our nation’s capital,” says Chip Scott, Senior Vice President and Operations Manager. "This will be Grunley’s fourth renovation project at The Washington Monument over the years.
The Washington Monument, complete with its modernized elevator and new visitor screening facility, is expected to reopen to the public in Spring 2019.
