    The Washington Monument Aglow on the National Mall

    On July 8, 2013 the National Park Service (NPS) held a special lighting ceremony at the Washington Monument. High-level officials including NPS Director Jonathan Jarvis, philanthropist David Rubenstein who donated $7.5 million to fund half the project, National Mall Superintendent Robert Vogel and Trust for the National Mall President Caroline Cunningham, spoke at the event. There was extensive media coverage of the event. Hundreds of spectators turned out for the ceremony.

    The lighting marks a milestone in the years-long effort to restore and reopen the monument following the 2011 earthquake.

Grunley and Perini Management Services, Inc. are currently performing the damage repair work, which includes removing and/or securing loose stone fragments, stone patching, repairing cracks, re-pointing and replacing the lightning protection system.

    The monument will remain closed to the public during repairs and reopen in Spring 2014. Worch Electric, one of our subcontractors, installed the 488 lamps that now illuminate the monument’s scaffolding and fabric wrapping nightly.
