The Washington Monument Aglow on the National Mall

Vogel told The Associated Press the lighting marks a milestone in the years-long effort to restore and reopen the monument following the 2011 earthquake. Grunley and Perini Management Services, Inc. are currently performing the damage repair work, which includes removing and/or securing loose stone fragments, stone patching, repairing cracks, re-pointing and replacing the lightning protection system.
The monument will remain closed to the public during repairs and reopen in Spring 2014. Worch Electric, one of our subcontractors, installed the 488 lamps that now illuminate the monument’s scaffolding and fabric wrapping nightly.
